A positive mental attitude. If you think that you can't lose weight or expect too much too soon then you will more than likely fail. Set yourself small achievable goals, like mini steps. These could include removing a bad section of your diet each week and setting yourself an amount of weight to lose each week, but remember be REALISTIC.
In addition to this surround yourself with positive people who create your support network. This will help you to keep on growing and have help if you do make a mistake once in a while.....we are only human =)

Attitude - if you have the wrong attitude to weight loss you set yourself up for a fail. Be positive no matter how small the loss is, you need to persist.
Research and plan - weight loss is long term not instant, also know what you are putting in your body dont just grab the latest fad diet pills and expect a miricle. Set a goal say over 6 months, then review. eat regular meals throughout the day to keep metabolism fired. Eat enough protein but dont cut out food groups as you need each to survive (just look at the quantity and quality)
Know what you want and commit to it - I see so many people over commiting because they have no direction and a long list....lose 5 pounds per week, gain muscle, get fitter and run faster all in 2 months.....its not realistic. Yes its good that you want to do all of that however each section needs to have time and effort spent on it as an individual target.

Motivation!! = A start!
Motivation is probably one of the hardest attributes to maintain when it comes to those who are overweight or even just those who do not have steady excerise routine in their daily regime.
Without motivation - even those goals set as mentioned by the two lovely people above will not be achieved.
Some simple tips for motivation:
Select a person in your life, not a celebritiy, but someone in your actual world, that inspires you to do and be better. Think of this person often and how they inspire you .. now take that inspiration one step forth and let it give you the energy to get up and go!
Music - play your favourite music, the type that makes you just want to get up and dance.. (with females i work with, i have found that dancing, even in ones living room, is a great motivational tool)
Meet and make contact with people who are active or on the same road you want to be on...... ask questions, make friends, gain knowledge....... the more knowledge you gain.. the more motivated your brain becomes to actually act out and achieve.
The BEST motivational tool........ is working together with someone.. a friend.. and helping each other work towards the goals set.
These are just a few tips...... the brain is a very powerful thing.... and as i often say, its time to:
"RETRAIN THE BRAIN"
Motivate your brain, set small goals....... work at them at a comfortable pace.....
AND YOU WILL ACHIEVE :)

Fantastic start to the discussion. Completely agree with both. Fad pills and diets need to be left in the shop until we analyse the actual course of the weight and the connection with food. Coming back to what suzie said "Retrain The Brain!" loving it =D
